Located along Korangi Creek in Karachi, the Mangrove Biodiversity Park, conceived & designed by Mr. Shah Murad Aliani-Environmentalist, and developed in house by TPL Developments in consultation with Tariq Alexander Qaiser-Architect, brings under conservation 50HA of Mangrove cover and serves as a vital step in raising awareness about Pakistan’s unique and diverse coastal ecosystems.

Established in partnership with the Sindh Forest Department (SFD) with sponsorship from TPL Properties, it marks the inauguration of a dedicated mangrove biodiversity park. The independent governing board comprises distinguished individuals from academia, environmental organisations, the arts, sustainability committees, and the government, uniting diverse expertise to provide the best possibility guidance to protect and grow the mangrove ecosystem.

Designed with minimal impact, it uses 80% recycled and natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and upcycled fishing nets. Eco-sensitive features include floating pathways, interactive learning boards, and a floating education center. “It is a sanctuary in the middle of our urban city” noted Chairman of the advisory board, Shah Murad Aliani, Former CR IUCN, & Member PM’s Climate Change Committee.

Beyond its design, the park is home to over 72 bird species, such as Kingfishers, Egrets, Eurasian Curlews, and many other migratory birds. Mudskippers and Fiddler crabs are also nestled amongst the Avicennia roots. The park serves as a model for Ecosystem restoration, testing innovative and sustainable techniques.
The park is a hub for education and research.

It hosts school field trips, university research programs, and corporate environmental initiatives. Curated tours led by a dedicated Park Curator helps visitors learn about the fundamental role mangroves play in both local and global ecosystems. The park also supports local community by employing and training them as guides and for various functions around the park. Emphasis is placed on being gender inclusive.

Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, commented on the initiative, “Karachi’s coastal belt has long been neglected, and this park is an important step towards reclaiming it for our citizens and for nature. It demonstrates our commitment to a green future, using urban forest projects to counter the effects of climate change and provide a healthier and more beautiful environment for everyone.”

This initiative is a powerful example of public-private collaboration, backed by an MoU between the SFD and TPL Properties to ensure its long-term protection and management. The park aligns directly with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action, life on land, gender equality, sustainable cities & communities, Life below water, Decent work & economic growth, and Good health & wellbeing.

“Mangroves are our first line of defence against coastal storms and a vital ecosystem to protect,” said Mr. Babal Khan Bhayo, Advisor to the CM Sindh Forest and Wildlife Department. “Through sustainable design and community participation, this park proves conservation, and recreation can go hand in hand, inspiring a national commitment to nature and climate action.”

The Mangrove Biodiversity Park is officially being opened to the public and is a testament to the power of conservation in enhancing Karachi’s coastal resilience, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation while providing a natural haven for all citizens and impacting the livelihoods of the local community.
